: Here
we go careering into the fall/winter
months after another wild and
crazy summer. Coming right up
is a tour of the Northwest US
with Paul
Machlis. We'll be celebrating
the material from our Legacy
of the Scottish Fiddle, Volume
One CD
as well as a few other tunes
from our various musical journeys
over the years. Please note
a couple of changes for this
tour: the Sonora concert scheduled
for OCT 18, 2002 has been moved
to May 16, 2003. This enables
us to have a fine old shindig
at the Wallace
Arms in Antioch, CA
OCT 18. I will still be playing
the Sonora
Christmas Festival as
scheduled at the end of November.
The Eugene, OR concert, previously
scheduled at Beal Hall, is
now at the wonderful new venue The
Shedd.
Something
else to note for those of you who
want to keep the new year celebrations
going 'till well after Burns' birthday
is the Alasdair Fraser School
of Fiddle and Dance to be held
at the prestigious Celtic
Connections festival in Glasgow,
Scotland (where else?) in January
2003. Joining me to teach and explore
for five days will be Aiden O'Rourke
(fiddle), Clare Maclaughlin(fiddle),
Karen Steven(fiddle), Natalie Haas(cello),
David Milligan(piano), Mats Melin(dance)
and others to be announced. A great
opportunity to be present at the
heart of the tenth anniversary year
of this wonderful festival. Hope
to see you there if not on the road
beforehand......
Here's
a little more information on this
unusual and exciting event coming
up next month. I first saw Lee Stetson
perform as John Muir in Yosemite
Valley in the mid eighties and enjoyed
the man and the play immensely. A
few years later I wrote my Lament
for Hetch Hetchy for the beautiful
valley of that name. Please go to Restore
Hetch Hetchy for more information
on this event.

Angelico Hall, Dominican University, San Rafael,
California
Acclaimed
actor Lee Stetson depicts
John Muir's last dramatic battle
to preserve the beautiful Hetch Hetchy
Valley, part of Yosemite National
Park, but threatened by San Francisco's
desire to construct a dam there,
drowning it hundreds of feet deep.
Audience members are his guests as
they await final word of the Hetch
Hetchy's fate from Washington decision-makers.
While waiting, Muir' righteous anger
at the 'temple destroyers' is tempered
by his hearty good humor, and his
relating of a number of his most
extraordinary wilderness adventures.
This program is a fine introduction
to both Muir the man, his profound
love of wildness, and his despair
over the loss of Hetch Hetchy Valley.
Doors
open at 6 PM, program begins at 7
PM.
